March 2, 2010

Today I went on the Congo Trail Zipline, about 10 minute drive from the hotel. A zipline is basically where you get attached to a cable using the harness to hold you up. You roll down the cable from platforms in the trees… sometimes you get to do tricks like today I did the Superman (imagine flying and you get the picture), and the Spiderman (where you put your feet up near the cable and hang upside down) and the recliner, where you lean back and look at the sky. My favorite was the Spiderman. We saw a Howler monkey in the trees, and 2 dogs that liked coming up on the platforms with us. There were 11 platforms that we went to. We learned that parrots like to take over termite nests (that at in the trees)—The parrots lay their eggs there because the termite nest is a perfect incubator. We saw fire ant on the plants, and had to be careful, because they live in the thorns of this plant.

After we were done with the zipline we went to a petting with squirrel monkeys, boa constrictors, lots of butterflies and chickens. The monkeys climbed all over us and bit our hair. They were very nice, and their hands were really soft and little. They ate sunflower seeds out of my hand. The boa constrictor was a teenager, about 2 feet long…I put it around my neck. It was shiny and cool. The rest of the afternoon I played in the pool and did my math homework.

  1. Hey Hunter...wow...what a day! Rory can TOTALLY relate to having to do math on a vacation. Sure, it kinda sucks...but, hey...only, like, 20 minutes out of a day, right? What's not to love? :)

Rory's snake, Pinkie, is also about 2.5 feet long now, but not as thick as a boa. NEAT picture, by the way. So, what's next? Alligator wrestling? Swimming with piranha? Being lowered into the gaping, lava-filled maw of an active volcano?

    Love,

    Uncle Steve
